The Law Enforcement Informed Training for Recognizing and Responding to Seizures helps to increase the knowledge and awareness of public safety professionals who interact with those living with epilepsy and seizure disorders to protect their health and safety, especially when they may not be able to respond to a law enforcement officer’s request.

Participants will be able to meet the following learning objectives:
Explain the importance of seizure recognition and training for law enforcement professionals.
Define seizures and epilepsy.
Apply responsive first aid techniques for law enforcement when encountering someone having a seizure ensuring prompt and appropriate assistance while maintaining safety.
Implement best practices for responding to epilepsy and seizures by prioritizing the well-being of individuals with epilepsy during emergencies, medical assistance, or other public safety encounters.

Who Can Take The Course?

This course has been designed for and with Law Enforcement Officers (LEOs). Public Safety Officers and Resource Officers at schools, Correctional Officers, and staff members of Law Enforcement Agencies may also complete this training.  

How can I take this course?

Register for a LIVE instructor-led training session by clicking the purple “Register for Live Session” button above. (If you are taking the training with others, each person needs to enroll separately.)  

You will be prompted to create an account on Epilepsy Learning Portal or sign in to your account. Save your login credentials for the post-assessment.  

BEFORE attending a LIVE instructor-led training: 

Complete the pre-course assessment, which may include a demographic survey, knowledge, and self-confidence assessment here on the Epilepsy Learning Portal (ELP).  

If attending a LIVE webinar session, please get in touch with the sponsoring organization directly if you don’t have the LIVE webinar session link for the session you plan to attend.   

Day of the LIVE instructor-led training: 

Attend the LIVE instructor-led training. Please arrive on time and allow 60-75 minutes to attend the live session. 

 Stay to the end of the LIVE session to receive instructions and a link to access the post-course assessments and evaluation. 

AFTER attending the LIVE instructor-led training: 

Use the link or QR code provided at the end of the LIVE instructor-led training to complete the post-course assessment and evaluation on the Epilepsy Learning Portal (ELP). 

Are There Any Prerequisites To Take The Course?
There are no prerequisites to take the course.
What Materials Or Equipment Do I Need To Take The Online Course?
You need access to a computer or device (smart phone, tablet, etc.) with reliable, high-speed internet. The browser must support JavaScript.
How Long Does It Take To Complete The Course Online?
Time to complete the course varies by each user. The course includes pre-course assessments, LIVE instructor-led training session, and post-assessments. Please allow 60-75 minutes to attend the live instructor-led session.
Are Continuing Education Units Available?

How Do I Get Credit For Taking The Course?
Upon completing the course, you must complete the online modules and evaluation to receive a certificate of completion.
How Long Is The Post-Assessment?
The time to complete the post-course work varies by each user. The post-assessment is not scored and consists of questions to assess your knowledge and confidence in applying best practices for responding to epilepsy and seizures.
