The Seizure First Aid Recertification course will renew skills and confidence to apply the Epilepsy Foundation’s approved procedures for responding to someone having a seizure.

This shortened renewal course aims to increase the knowledge, skill, and confidence in applying seizure first aid. This information is presented in an interactive eLearning format with animations, videos, and activities to enhance the learning experience. 

Participants who successfully complete this renewal course will remain Seizure First Aid Certified for an additional two years.

Participants will be able to meet the following learning objectives:
Identify correct and incorrect steps for helping a person having a seizure
Identify when it would be necessary to call emergency personnel (911) in the event of a seizure
Increase your confidence that you can help a person during a seizure

Who should take this recertification course?

This course is for individuals who already hold a two-year Seizure Recognition and First Aid Certification. The standard course was launched and available to the public in March 2020.

How can I renew my Seizure First Aid Certification?

To renew your Seizure First Aid Certification enroll in this on demand version of the course by clicking the purple Start Online Course button. 

To start the course, view the course instructions. this course requires completion of the pre-assessment before gaining access to the interactive modules. The modules take about 45 minutes to complete. The modules, assessments, and course evaluation must be completed to successfully complete this training and renew your certification for an additional two years.

To take this course you should already hold a two-year Seizure First Aid Certification
How long does it take to renew my Seizure First Aid Certification?
Time to complete the course varies by each user. The course includes a pre-assessment, interactive modules, and post-assessment. These modules must be taken in order. The pre-assessment must be completed before gaining access to the interactive modules. The modules take around 45 minutes to complete. The modules and course evaluation must be completed to successfully complete this training and receive a certificate of completion and remain Seizure First Aid Certified for an additional two years.
How Do I Get Credit For Taking The Course?
Upon completing the course, you must complete the online post-assessment and evaluation to receive a certificate of completion.
What Materials Or Equipment Do I Need To Take The Online Course?
You need access to a computer or device (smart phone, tablet, etc.) with reliable, high-speed internet. The browser must support JavaScript.
How long does the certification last?

This short recertification lasts one year.

Recertification Cycle

Your certification follows an alternating cycle to keep you up to date:

Full Certification Course (Seizure Recognition and First Aid Certification): Valid for 2 years, covers all content.

Short Recertification Course (Seizure First Aid Recertification): Valid for 1 year, focused review.

Pattern:

Year 0 – Full Certification Course

Year 2 – Short Recertification Course

Year 3 – Full Certification Course

Year 5 – Short Recertification Course

Year 6 – Full Certification Course

After your recertification expires, you’ll need to enroll in the Full Certification Course (Seizure Recognition and First Aid Certification On Demand or Instructor-Led Training (ILT)) to maintain your certification. 

This approach ensures you stay current, confident, and maintain program credibility.

Are Continuing Education Units Available?

If you are a certified health education specialist (CHES™/MCHES™), you will be eligible for continuing education credits after completing the course and passing the post-assessment and completing the course evaluation.

This program is designated for Certified Health Education Specialists (CHES™) and/or Master Certified Health Education Specialists (MCHES™) to receive up to 1.0 total Category I contact education contact hours. How Long Is The Post-Assessment?
The post-assessment consists of several multiple-choice questions.
