Seizure Training for School Nurses: Caring for Students is a program designed to provide the school nurse with information, strategies, and resources that will enable him/her to better manage the student with seizures by: 

  • Supporting positive treatment outcomes,
  • Maximizing educational and developmental opportunities and
  • Ensuring a safe and supportive environment. 
  • The program consists of seven modules to assist the school nurse in learning to effectively manage seizures in a school environment.


Course Objectives:
Identify 2 of the most common seizure types in students with epilepsy, potential seizure triggers, and risk factors for seizures and emergencies.
Identify 3 ways in which treatment of epilepsy may affect a student’s health, safety, or learning.
Apply 2 strategies to alleviate psychosocial challenges relating to epilepsy for students, parents, and school personnel.
List 3 first aid steps for helping a student during and after a seizure.
Create a Seizure Action Plan for a student with epilepsy using safe practices for medication administration and delegation.

The course is intended for school nurses, but anyone can take the course to learn about epilepsy.

Are There Any Prerequisites To Take The Course?
There are no prerequisites to take the course.
What Materials Or Equipment Do I Need To Take The Online Course?
You need access to a computer or device (smart phone, tablet, etc.) with reliable, high-speed internet. The browser must support JavaScript.
How Long Does It Take To Complete The Course Online?
Time to complete the course varies by each user. There are seven required modules in the training, which takes around 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete.
Are Continuing Education Units Available?

If you are a registered nurse, you will be eligible for continuing nurse education credits after completing the course and passing the post-assessment and completing the course evaluation.

This nursing continuing professional development activity was approved by the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Accreditation Period: April 1, 2020 to March 31, 2022

Total number of nursing contact hours awarded for this educational activity: 2.75

Upon completing the course, you must complete the online post-assessment and evaluation to receive a certificate of completion.
How Long Is The Post-Assessment?
The post-assessment consists of several multiple-choice questions.
